So I received Kelsey and Mandy’s poster sometime shortly after New Years. And needless to say, 2013–self dubbed “Year of the Marino”– has caught me in a whirlwind in all facets of life. An Uncle to be, 6 months into the new job, now car payments, iPhones, keys to the work place, and soon to be a quarter century old. Hey, what better time than now, lets DO THIS!

photo-1The Cincinnati Duo went patterning and had a field day! Let off the filters and formal qualities of what we all may know of in our typical “day” jobs and broke out the colored pencils, stars, fishes, snails, and funny quips throughout the plethora of patterns.

I love the little mentions of “Sexyphone” in the bottom left corner, referencing Courtney’s last poster (utilizing the Saxaphone–good job girls!) and playing with the sound, as well as the shape of the sax right there. I can tell you two just had fun and were probably joking around the whole time, too. I love the care-free aspect, especially since I tend to put too much pressure on myself and work (mini-freak outs anyone?)

More type details that I love. Humorous copy, and loving the “Metallica-esque” letters in ‘Want’ and ‘say’. Ride the Lightning!

photo-5Also, it looks like Amber’s handwriting, but there is now a receptacle to transfer our little Love Notes to each other! I love it how every time I get this package of goodies, there’s always stuff that’s completely different. Such is the beauty of this project!

Well done my Cincinnati Comrades! Hell of a fight in a time crunch! I’ll pick up the slack on this end and try and have something out promptly. What it might entail, something “sexy” like stated in the poster? Hmm.. I like pushing the boundaries, but I feel like I’ve already said too much. To the studio it is!

Alright my Friends. This is the point in time where I either choose to give you my version of the story or do the copy/paste of my friend Mandy’s version of how this first round of partners and patterns went down. Tough choice, but I think that I can trust you all to not believe anything this lovely co-worker of mine says. ;) So without further adieu, meet my co-worker, fashionista, constant one-upper-er, prank-puller, and super sassy but talented friend, Mandy!

Here is her version of how this round went:

It was a dark and eerie night. I walked out the door of my LPK, holding one key between my pointer finger and middle finger (so that I could stab someone if they attacked me, of course). In my other hand, I kept my finger ready to unlock my cell phone…just in case. Walking briskly to my car, I am alert to everything around me. My eyes dart from here to there…from the tree to a car to a building to a…and there it is…what I was so afraid of running into. The KelsSmells.

The KelsSmells. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t run or hide…she’d seen me. What could I do but wait for her to catch up and then smile as she babbles on and on about everything, EVERYTHING…yeah every little…tiny…minute detail. That’s what she does. What she ALWAYS does. The KelsSmells.

“Oh yeah?”

“Is that right?”

“Mmmhmmm…”

“Yes. I see.”

I nod and smile. Smile and nod. She goes on and on…all of you know what I’m talking about. She’s just a talker, that girl! And then it happens.

“So, Mandy…I was thinking…I mean you are the coolest, most awesomest person I KNOW…I was just wondering if maybe…maybe you would just grace me with your effervescent presence and help me with this tiny little project I have going on. It’s not much. It won’t take long, I promise. All I need is for you to spend an hour on it…no biggie…just an hour. A tiny little hour. What do you think?”

WELL WTF! What COULD I do?!!! It’s the KelsSmells. You can’t say “no”! You just CAN’T!

“Oh! And can you come in tomorrow? I know it’s the beginning of your FIRST 3 WEEK BREAK SINCE YOU WERE 16 YEARS OLD…but really…this is SOOO important to me. I just need to show my friends that I’m friends with you…I mean they all talk about you all the time. Everyone knows how great you are…it wld really mean a lot to me. PLEEEEEEEEEEASE?”

Oh KelsSmells! You want me to help you with a little project, do you? It’ll only take an hour, will it? Just come on in on my first day off in 20 years, eh? Ok! Ok! Whatever you WANT, KelsSmells. Whatever. You. Want.

So I come in. On my FIRST day off in 20 years…and spend an hour…or FIVE…perfecting every little detail of that beautiful poster…while KelsSmells is “in a meeting”, (that lasts ALL DAY LONG), I slave away on this project for her.

And when it’s finished. I look at it and I realize…I AM AMAZING. KelsSmells is right.

Oh. That KelsSmells.”

Longest post ever, yes. But we hope you are looking forward to the reveal! Seriously, we had a lot of fun getting off the computer from our normal packaging designing to just having some fun! We’ll let Dan show you how it came out!

New Year, New Ideas…

Flat Rate Collaborate update yall!

As many of you may have noticed from a couple of posts ago, a “certain” collaborator has moved to a “certain” new city. This “certain” new city is already inhabited by another collaborator…

Ok, Let us just spell it out for you. Two out of your beloved Four collaborators now live in the same city!! That’s 50%! What does this mean for FRC? Many might call this a gamechanger…. Or say that the premise of the project is ruined… But ,aha, it most definitely is not! We are embracing this change with arms wide open by adding a new twist to the way in which we can collaborate through this project. Having two people in the same city got us thinking. Why not try partner collaborations? That’s right, TWO people working on ONE poster… TOGETHER. Then we thought, Well hey, Why not add this as a wild card option to the entire project? Sometimes there may be two designers living in the same city that want to Guest collaborate with us and design a poster together.

So stay tuned. You’ll be seeing some partner collaborations this round and potentially some in future rounds! As always, holler if you’d like to join us in our ever-evolving collaborative project. We’d love to have you!

That’s all for now folks!

That’s my favorite part about it– you see something different evertime you look at it! Plus, which way is up and which is down? One will never know. (i see a teal woman with blonde flowy hair this way and a man with a hat:))A-lnsMfCEAI2ELH.jpg-large

My fellow collaborators, all hail FRC! This project has completely won my heart over. It’s truly remarkable how easy it is to fall back into a funkadelic creative state when you simply just let yourself go. It just reaffirms that there is no greater reward than creating. (I know you all feel me on that.)

Without spoiling the final execution entirely, here’s a little foreshadow and insight around my exploratory process along the FRC journey. I’m not sure if it was the knee slappin’ Motown jam session, the pumpkin ale from Trader Joe’s, or playing the air saxophone, or perhaps it was a combination of all three, but whatever it was, I slipped into a deep, abstract, exploratory state; a playful realm of thinking that I haven’t experienced in far too long.

(Also, just a sidebar, I’m thinking about adding air saxophone to my skills and expertise on LinkedIn so please feel free to endorse me.)

Music may sound similar to each of us, but depending on the certain individual, he or she may interpret it differently. Because it seems to happen more often then not, that we unexpectedly take away a little something extra from our personal interaction with music, I was passionate about visually capturing this playful element of exploration and discovery.

It may resonate differently with each of us but there’s no denying music ties us together. I tried playing piano as a child but skipped out on many lessons because the neighborhood kick ball game or wall ball seemed far more entertaining. Needless to say, as a result of my reluctance to learn Mary Had A Little Lamb, I have a sincere appreciation for the artistry behind music. If you’ve ever had the pleasure to witness a musician in his or her element, which I’m sure you all have, you’ll know that he or she gets lost in another transit world. There’s this profound, transformational cross dissolving between the musician, the brilliant creation of sound and the instrument. It truly is a beautiful thing to witness. In an effort to visually celebrate the pure essence, passion and love a musician shares with his or her unique sound and instrument, I experimented with this playful morph-like rendition.

Shannon offered me a ton of inspiration to pull from. I adopted her chunky use of profound, bold colors, text overlay and the conceptual idea specifically centered on transparency that I previously touched on in my last FRC blog post.

I hope you all enjoy the poster as much as I enjoyed the experience of getting lost in the moment and simply creating. Along with this post, I’m sending each of you the largest of hugs and a sincere thank you for allowing the FRC project to take a pit stop in the 804. It’s been awesome. Next stop – The Buckeye State.
